Fulton’s No1 Mk3 Target Rifle
Enfield target rifles, finely tuned by G. E. Fulton, were an absolute ‘must have’ item 85 years ago if you took winning at shooting competitions seriously. Half a world away ,’down unda’, where only a trickle of these rifles ever made it, they were even more looked up to.
. This is a No1 mk3 BSA Co made target rifle, accurized by G.Fulton, circa 1920.
Rifle is circa 1920′s and has a Model TZ twin zero aperture sight by AGP Parker Hale. The eyepiece is a PH iris with 1.25 inch large filter holder.
Many accurizing improvements throughout, a testament to decades of serious competing. This is a brief summary of the 12 major methods used on this rifle;
1 H or heavy barrel, by Lithgow, Australia.
2 Fully bedded action, including tight side bedding to control yaw.
3 Barrel is bedded at points along it’s length, including under the knox form.
4 Lateral striations built up in the the metal of the receiver’s underside to make the receiver bite onto the fore end wood, controlling fore and aft movement under recoil.
5 Mid band is tightly packed.
6 Nose cap fully bedded.
7 Trigger guard is carefully bedded to sit absolutely neutral and free of side pressures.
8 Trigger guard is packed either side of the trigger to control pressure on the fore end, and up pressure on the barrel tip.
9 The trigger guard has an L 42 type of small pressure plate installed at the front trigger screw.
10 Fore end has brass recoil blocks installed.
11 The receiver has been widened at the front portion with the addition of shaped steel plates, to help control lateral rocking.
12 The 1964 Canadian Championship team devised a method of reducing movement of the fore end by drilling two long bolts back from the magazine well and through the wrist, this accurizing method has been installed.

This next rifle is a BSA co made enfield no1 mk3, pre WW2, accurized by both Parker Hale and Fultons. It has a PH5a sight with a PH59 6 hole eyepiece. It was owned by the Royal New Zealand Navy, probably used by their shooting team.
It has a standard no1mk3 profile barrel, stiffened with 3 extra internal springs and restrained by another spring under that brass strap over the fore end.

Enfield made No1 enfield, 1907, fitted with a heavy H profile target barrel, and has a Parker hale Plus5 aperture sight, with PH iris eyepiece with built in filter disc, plus a brass trim piece on the eyepiece front.
The rifle was a sporterized hunting rifle until 2007 when it was restored with reproduction parts for target shooting.

BSA version of the No1 Mk3 H barrel, much larger profile than No1 Mk3, a very good barrel, good luck finding one, lol.

How to recognize an H barrel. This H mark is always on them, the MA is most of the time and it usually also has a year mark, omitted on this one. Year dates are usually 1942 t0 1955.

Sadly this is not George Fulton’s personnel rifle somehow made it’s way to my collection on the other side of the world, it’s the standard stamp used on early Fulton’s rifles. I emailed and no, they don’t have any records of any of the rifles they made. Fulton’s still exist after 125 years or so, and are listed in the alphabetical quick find list.

A typical home grown NZ target rifle, H barrel, humble appearance but very accurate.
