Quite common with No4's and presumably before it, No1's too.
Open up the crack and insert an aircraft spec woodworking adhesive. Press it in so that it gets right into the crack then squeeze together using a set of G cramps.
When it's cured, drill a small hole about .2" diameter right through the fore-end, say, about 7/8" forwards of the screw front trigger guard and then make a shallow tapered oak peg that will fit into the hole but tightens up part way through.
Then using normal woodworkers glue, cement both the hole and the peg and knock it in until it comes out of the other side.
The bugger won't split again. Splits there are usually caused by loose fore-ends OR worn out fore-ends where the screw and trigger guard have continually squeezed them down. This was one of the reasons why the L42 fore-end was permitted to have a reinforce plate in that area and old No4's still have a screw across the fore-end
